Samsung’s new Series 9 laptops match Apple’s Retina with 13-inch display

Samsung had better hope that Apple  can’t patent screen resolutions. Engadget on Friday got a look at Samsung’s newest Series 9 laptops that made their way out to the trade show floor even though they weren’t announced as part of Samsung’s gigantic product launch earlier this week.

The Series 9’s display has a resolution of 2560 by 1440 pixels and a matte finish that makes it easy to view in bright light, Engadget reports. Assuming the screen measures 13.3 inches–same as existing Series 9 laptops–the density would be roughly 220 pixels per inch. Apple’s MacBook Pro with Retina Display achieves roughly the same pixel density on a 15.4-inch, 2880 by 1800 pixel screen.

Of course, Apple’s laptop has the considerable advantage of actually existing on the market today. The Series 9 on display at IFA was apparently just an engineering sample, and Samsung isn’t saying anything about specs, pricing or release date.

Without official information on specs, my main concern is battery life. In general, the higher the display resolution, the more power you need. That could be an issue if Samsung wants to keep the laptop looking svelte. (The existing 13-inch Series 9 laptops measure a half-inch thick, which is 0.2 inches thinner than the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.)

Don’t expect this PC to come cheap, either. The Series 9 is already Samsung’s most expensive line, with a starting price of $1,300 for the 13-inch model. A 220-ppi display will likely send that price skyward.

Still, it’s nice to see a premium PC design that rivals Apple without looking like a shameless copy. This could be a winner if Samsung can make the specs work.

Find which one is best laptop or Tablet?

There is a lot of rubbish being written about how tablets are supplanting laptops.

Tablets have made an enormous impact, there is no doubt about it. Over a million, by far the majority of them iPads, have been sold in Australia over the last two years.Desktop PCs lost out against laptops once their prices converged, but now even laptop sales are suffering as more and more people shift to the tablet paradigm.

The market has led some to predict the death of the Desktop PC. That is unlikely to happen – both device types have their place. Tablets are great devices for consuming information, but they are not so good at creating it. PCs shine for heavy duty input and high level processing – the sort of work performed by the so-called “power users”.

So will the functional difference between the two devices. Microsoft’s new Surface tablet (at least the higher end Surface Pro) will run a full version of Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system, and have virtually all the capabilities of a laptop PC. It will have a full size keyboard that doubles as a cover for the screen, as well as tablet touch screen capability. Is it a tablet or a PC?

Microsoft’s Surface Pro comes in way over the iPad in price and functionality, and the Nexus comes in way under. The Nexus is smaller, much cheaper, and tied much more to the cloud – processing and storage on the Internet – which is the model Google sees as the future of information processing.

Microsoft talks about cloud processing, but it still has a PC mindset, with apps and data within the local device. Google has a very different ethos – it has taken to heart the mantra of Scott McNealy, the founder of Sun Microsystems, who famously said “the network is the computer.”

Do you want a tablet that works like a PC and costs as much as a PC, or do you want a tablet that weighs and costs less than half as much, and which draws its data and its apps – and its inspiration – from the Internet? Or do you want an iPad?

I can’t see any device type winning out over any other. Different functionality, different size (sorry – “form factor”), different purpose.
